It only remained for the British... to name their price for putting the seal of the proprietor on a transaction so satisfactory to them. What London required were sovereign military enclaves on Cyprus – little ‘Gibraltars’, as Macmillan put it. There was less euphemism on the ground. ‘We should open our mouths wide,’ wrote the key British official in Nicosia. The area gulped down was forty times the size of Gibraltar, and when the final treaties establishing the new state and its constitution were signed, more pages were devoted to British bases in Cyprus than to all its other provisions combined – a juridical unicum.

the Srebrenica massacre of July 1995 has survived as a now institutionalized “genocide.” But it has done so in the face of intractable problems: the NATO-organized and compliant Yugoslav Tribunal identified it as such by finding that there could be genocide in one small town, where the genocidists had bussed to safety all the women and children of their target population, and where the claims of 8,000 executed have never been verified by forensic or credible witness evidence of anything like this scale of killing. It lives on by virtue of its political utility and aggressive challenges to its truthfulness as “revisionism” and “denial.”

Dr Robert Hare, a psychologist and internationally renowned expert on psychopathy ... told us that many of the attitudes people adopt and the actions they execute when acting as corporate operatives can be characterised as psychopathic. You 'try to destroy your competitors, or you want to beat them one way of another,' said Hare, 'and you're not particularly concerned with what happens to the general public as long as they're buying your product.' Yet, despite the fact that executives must often manipulate and harm others in pursuit of their corporation's objectives, Hare insists they are not psychopaths. That is because they can function outside the corporation... Businesspeople should therefore take some comfort from their ability to compartmentalise the contradictory moral demands of their corporate and noncorporate lives, for it is precisely this 'schizophrenia'... that saves them from becoming psychopaths.
