It was in December 2001, after the passing of the Anti-terrorism, Crime and Security Act, that G became one of 12 foreign nationals detained in Belmarsh prison. Police and immigration officials arrived at 4am, and took him away on his crutches. "There were 15 police officers crammed into this one-bedroomed flat," G recalls. "They were swearing and very aggressive. My young daughter started crying." There was no stopping at a police station to be interviewed - it was straight to Belmarsh. To this day, neither G nor any of the other detainees have been told what they are supposed to have done, and G has still not been questioned by police or security services. The "Belmarsh 12" have never appeared in a normal court to answer charges...

McDonalds is planning a campaign to remove the word ‘McJob’ from the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). The word has become synonymous for a job with little satisfaction and low wages. The official OED definition of a McJob (added to the dictionary in March 2001) is: "McJob (noun): An unstimulating, low-paid job with few prospects, esp. one created by the expansion of the service sector."

Gordon Brown has put up some revealing archive films on the Downing Street website. If we had any illusions that we currently had a Labour Party prime minister ensconced in Downing Street, possessing even an inkling of labour sympathies, a brief look at his selection of noteworthy films should disillusion us:

As I write, highly civilized human beings are flying overhead, trying to kill me.

They do not feel any enmity against me as an individual, nor I against them. They are ‘only doing their duty’, as the saying goes. Most of them, I have no doubt, are kind-hearted law-abiding men who would never dream of committing murder in private life.
