Their existence must be terminated

antarchi's picture

On 15 September 1915... Talaat Pasha, the Turkish Interior minister, cabled an instruction to his prefect in Aleppo about what he should do with the tens of thousands of Armenians in his city. "You have already been informed that the government... has decided to destroy completely all the indicated persons living in Turkey... Their existence must be terminated, however tragic the measures taken may be, and no regard must be paid to either age or sex, or to any scruples of conscience."

the memory hole

While Alan Johnston was being held, I was asked by the BBC World Service if I would say a few words of support for him. I readily agreed, and suggested I also mention the thousands of Palestinians abducted and held hostage. The answer was a polite no; and all the other hostages remained in the memory hole.

they are seeking a place

antarchi's picture

The fascists destroyed our lives, so that even today we are unable to forget. Today we wander through the whole of Europe, searching for what the fascists took from us. Among us there are children who have Romani mothers and German fathers – children whose mothers were raped and came into the world that way children like J.S. and A. who wander with us as Roma and not as Germans. They also are seeking a place where they can stay and lead meaningful, dignified lives.

my permanent possessions

antarchi's picture

...never in the history of mankind, never anywhere in the realm of human relations did anything occur to compare with what was inflicted on the Jewish population of Poland... The images of what I saw in the death camp are, I am afraid, my permanent possessions. I would like nothing better than to purge my mind of these memories.

palestinian refugees

antarchi's picture

There are approximately 8 million Palestinians in the world today. Over half the entire Palestinian population were expelled from their homes in the 1947-49 Nakba (catastrophe) that followed partition and the creation of the State of Israel. A second wave of Palestinian refugees was created after the 1967 war, when Israel occupied the remainder of Palestine. One million Palestinians whose families were not driven out in 1948 live as second class citizens in the state of Israel.

Until now, not a single Palestinian refugee from 1948 nor their families have received a penny of compensation for their forcible dispossession nor have they been allowed to return to their homes.

4,000 Roma gassed

antarchi's picture

On December 16th [1941], Himmler issued the order to have all Roma remaining in Europe deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau for extermination. On December 24th, Lohse gave the additional order that "The Gypsies should be given the same treatment as the Jews." At a party meeting on September 14th, 1942, Justice Minister Otto Thierack announced that "Jews and Gypsies must be unconditionally exterminated." On August 1st, 1944, four thousand Roma were gassed and cremated in a single action at Auschwitz-Birkenau, in what is remembered as Zigeunernacht.
